Meet the Artist: Paula Kennedy

Related Content

Paula Kennedy is a wonderful illustrator and painter who cut her teeth in Edinburgh. A town known more for its theatre and it's New Year's Festival than its contribution to the visual art world. Paula has the distinct pleasure of being only our first female Meet the Artist to not be a photographer. Right on.

Has your job ever got you laid, free drink, arrested well free drink yes, arrested no and I'm saving myself....

What did you want to be as a kid? I wanted to be a drummer in real life. Then a base player then a lead guitarist, finally the lead singer. As I sucked at all of these options I settled on the triangle. I make a mean ding!

What's the best tool of your trade? a scanner, whos mighty power aids all things illustratory

Why did you choose these three images? I chose these images as they are based on a selection of songs that have in some way influenced me in my life. They represent a lingering, permanent visual reference point that doesn't disappear when the music finishes. It can be argued that good music speaks for itself, however it is only a temporal art, meaning that when the music finishes, there is only silence. It leaves no visible or tangible trace only what the listener remembers. However by joining together the music with visuals, it can evoke a response from another sense, not just the sense of sound. It is the collision of these worlds that deepen our understanding of music, sometimes conveying the music's character and explaining the content through the use of printed graphics.

How would you describe them to a blind person? I'd probably struggle, then give a description about colours and themes and they'd probably end up with a completely different image in their head

If your art was music what would it sound like? I'd love to say Bob Dylan mixed with the Beatles, however I think that might be talking it up

Slate yourself. I sometimes like to brag about my pointless talents

Big up yourself. I can make a triangle out of a crisp packet in under 3 seconds!!

How far have you gone for your art? All the way to sunny Edinburgh for a masters in Illustration then just stayed for 3 years as it was such a pretty city!

I want to see more Paula Kennedy, and I want to see her now
