Label Mates : Prime Numbers
Manchester, so much to answer for. Prime Numbers boss David Wolstencroft – aka Trus’Me – reveals his masterplan.
When and why did the label start?
The label started back in January 2007, and has gone from strength to strength with every release and now has a strong core fan base. Prime Numbers is a way of expressing my expansive musical taste and also to showcase what you can expect to hear me play when I visit your city. The label is a movement and a direction for my predominately UK based artists to express themselves in any way they feel fit. Prime Numbers is an open book.
Who or what was your biggest influence?
Manchester and the wonderful variety of music that was being played growing up in my youth. Anything from indie to reggae and techno, it all made the genetic make up of what you hear in my production and style behind the decks. If I had to choose my biggest Influence it would be a toss up between Marvin and Stevie.
Best career move?
Doing it myself, control your own platform, image, release schedule and quality. If you want a job doing right, do it yourself!
Biggest hit?
I've been lucky to have big sales on everything I have released so far, I'll try my best to keep the quality up.
Biggest miss?
Fingers crossed but nothing yet, I think when that happens I may walk away.
If you could sign one artist, who would it be?
I'm not interested in superstars, this is about music.
Does vinyl still matter?
98%. I say 98% as this is the percentage of media I sell Prime Numbers music on. Vinyl is still the medium of choice for the music we put out on PN. I still play 100% with vinyl. CD for me is for upfront material as tests are so costly these days. I can't understand label bosses who turn up and play CD or worse Serato when they sell vinyl. Imagine a BMW salesman turning up to work in a Mercedes, crazy.
What is the secret to success?
Strategy. Think it our carefully - study business as well as musical practice. Learn your trade - this is a business after all. Be honest, stay true and keep that driven nature in everything you do and you have a fighting chance.
Top tip?
Listen to as much music you can, open your ear play it all, learn what rocks a crowd. Once you have that knowledge you have the weapons. Knowledge is power.
Do you dance?
Ha, yeah - I like to really swing it. Any dj who doesn't I have to question, that’s the same as asking does a football coach like kicking a ball about.
What is next for the label?
My new project is Disco 3000 festival, an events company. We have put together an authentic pan-European festival - over 40 hours of the best underground music from across the continent. We’ve called in lots of favours and delved deep into our pockets to bring you the best DJs, groups, music promoters, labels and club nights we have had the pleasure of working with over the past five years.
