Whats people's view on FB charging for businesses and fans who wish to have their posted seen by more people who have 'liked' them in the past?

Seems to be a lot of people unsure as to what exaclty it going to change if everything? Chymera posted this link which explains a bit:

I can't really see the issue with it, Businesses using Facebook can't expect a free lunch surely?

    My experience is this.

Have built up fans for my clubnight Discotekken over the last 2 yrs or so on facebook. At about 1300 now which isn't anything crazy but I'm happy enough with it.

Before, when I posted, everyone who had (voluntarily) liked my page, would see my post, if they were online, or perhaps next time they were.

Now, out of 1300, facebook restricts these views to 200 or so. This number goes up depending on how many interactions the post gets ie likes, comments etc.

I have the option to pay 4 pounds sterling to enable all of my fans to view my post, this is PER POST.

Afaic they make fucking billions on advertising already, so this move is simply greedy & stupid, as I can't see people willing to pay that kind of money to simply display a single post.

Lastly, in my scenario, and most other small clubnight promoters, it's not like we're hugely profitable businesses, so again, a stupid move from facebook & all it's going to do is decrease my interest in using it to promote ma biz.

*edit, may as well get a plug in

like you have to remember, facebook needs us as much as we 'need' facebook.

people have become used to interacting with their favourite bands, clubnights, clothes shops etc, it's an integral part of what facebook is today.

so if you take that away, and you're left seeing only posts (ignoring friends) from the compaines / organisations who can afford to pay - that leads to a less enjoyable user experience overall. so nobodies a winner.

keep your like page but set it up like its a person.

You can have a personal facebook call it your clubnight, spend a few days adding friends, and use that facility to promote. You can have up to 5000 friends beating your 1300 likes. It's ridiculous but think of the corporate companies who have facebook pages, McDonalds, Starbucks etc. etc. and with marketing budgets.

You can also set up pages for people to like from your normal facebook 'friend' page. I set up a football team on my own facebook as a like page but have since deleted my old facebook.

It's so commercial if I was a promoter or promoting something I would use it all the time

It's also voluntary if people ask you to be a friend.

    got a friend page too

there are advantages & disadvantages to both, at least with fanpages you're dealing with a greater proportion of people who give a shit.

I have 2500 friends on the freind page - how many of them give a fuck about the night? a lot less than the fanpage anyway.

True, I guess with the friend page, from the outside looking in, you probably need to keep it up with the promoting and the likes you get on each post would determine if you have real likes. but yeah a 'Lot' of people just fill their friends lists with 'cool' things like a badge and to make them look more popular and make up numbers I guess. I guess with the friends list event invites are good on a weekly basis to say whos going and keep that invite page up to date with comments and mixes, youtube videos etc. and people who opt to go, get the little red in the corner everytime theres a comment added to the event, you probably know all this anyways

it's a bit annoying if they charging charities who are trying to get money, are non profits exempt from this or what?

I can tell you for definite that this rumour that has been spreading is entirely false.

Here's a message from a colleague to George Takei who had heard the same meme:

I work at FB and even work on the product you describe, and I wanted to drop a note to say that we've changed NOTHING about the way page posts are delivered to fans. I still see your posts in my feed all the time (keep 'em coming :). The main point of confusion we've seen is that pages don't realize that their posts were never reaching 100% of fans. If you go to your page insights, you'll see this has always been the case.

And it makes sense if you stop and think about it: there is just no way to see all of the stuff happening on FB in your feed. Personally, I have over 700 friends and have probably fanned 1000s of pages, there is no way I can see all of their posts in my feed everyday. Fortunately, FB does a pretty good job ranking content based on the people and pages I interact with the most. So naturally, George Takei and Taco Bell are usually at the top of my feed :)

All Promoted Page Posts does is offer an easy way for page admins to pay to promote a post using FB ads using functionality that already existed. A lot of businesses use posts to promote sales, concerts, etc and its an easy way to get more distribution and we've gotten a lot of positive feedback from pages about the product.

We actually did a webinar last week explaining a bunch of this so if you can bear to watch (unfortunately i don't have your camera presence), check it out here:http://livestre.am/3XeS0

Shenanigans. Both my missus and I noticed we getting lower reactions on our fanpages two months ago, low and behold we now have the option to promote posts if we're willing to pay. That spiel from yer man is classic Facebook whitewash, and I'm far from a 'fuck the corporations' type btw. That whole group migration thing was a farce too. Went from a group of 800 members (again voluntarily joined up) to nothing. Yes there was the option to re-add everyone back in, but in short, fuck that.

    Load of cock and balls.
