The nights are getting longer and the days colder, so we thought we’d bring a little warmth into your life by previewing a couple of new compilations due to hit the shelves (or the pixellated versions thereof) in the next couple of weeks.
First up is the new Fabriclive mix by LCD ring leader James Murphy and drummer Pat Mahoney. A quick history, Mahoney and Murphy (other than sounding like the perfect crimefighting team for a buddy movie) of course are two of LCD Soundsystem, which really should need no introduction. Murphy is also one of the founders of DFA Records, known for latching onto that early 00's dance-punk sound and making it huge.
Absolutely none of this will prepare you for the joy that is their new Fabriclive compilation. If you’re expecting a mix full of the usual tightly mixed tech-house-punk-funk fair, think again. The common theme here would be funk and disco, which is bound to upset a few DFA/LCD fans, but please nearly anyone with an ear for great tunes.
Clearly influenced by that easily distinguished New York disco sound, the mix runs a whole gauntlet of artists from Salsoul classics to the latest DFA smash, ‘Still Going Theme’. Most recognisable from recent times are;
Daniel Wang - “Like Some Dream (I Can’t Stop Dreaming)”, a superbly textured track with great vocal snippets and some distant epic snyths, its instantly recognisable;
Baby Oliver - “Primetime (Uptown Express)”, released on Environ earlier this year, a basic track with a load of Metro Area influence and a very Kraftwerk obsession with public transport;
Jackson Jones – “I Feel Good Put Your Pants On”, this is the recent Pilooski edit, resurrecting a really obscure Caribbean gem from way back in the 70s, and transforming it into a slow and sleazy jam.
The majority of the tracklist is from way back when though, and provides a great journey through time and space from anyone who gives it time to grow. Favourites are;
JT – “I Love Music”, another slow and sexy track, with a lovely thick funky synth, like a more relaxed version of Kano – I’m Ready;
Donald Byrd – “Love Has Come Around”, an oldie, but Murphy and Goldsworthy have done a re-edit job on this one, looping the best bits and giving it a real rolling and dirty sound, probably our favourite on the album.
More so than some recent Fabric mixes, this comp really roots through a whole range of genres and eras, giving it a much more timeless sound. It’s not mixed to perfection, with a few key clashes and mistakes, but they almost make the mix better, giving it a proper live feel that a pre-sequenced computer set would ruin. Basically, the mix feels like something which has been drawn from musical love and knowledge and stitched together by hand wonderfully. The aged quality of most of the tracks could help ensure that this one never gets old, we’ll definitely be listening to it for a while to come.

Fatboy Slim – Late Night Tales
This guy hasn’t exactly been top of his form in the last while, with a number of albums ranging from blah to horrible. Still, fondly remembered are some stone-cold classic compilations such as On the Floor at the Boutique and his CD from the Essential Millennium collection, clearly somewhere, the man has musical talent. So it was with great interest we noted that he would be putting together the latest instalment in post club session series “Late Night Tales”. Known for its more eclectic track lists, we wondered what sort of selection we’d see from Mr. Cook.
Well, good news, it’s actually a damn good selection. Granted it’s not exactly filled with obscure electronica and 50s orchestral whistling-jazz, but it’s got plenty of depth and fun to give it that listen-ability required.
Theres no chin-scratching introduction here, as we kick right off with “Mink DeVille - Spanish Stroll”, Rolling Stones-esque rock with a very memorable chorus, you’ll probably know it already. Next up is “Modern Lovers – Roadrunner”, which you should recognise as having been sampled by dancehall princess M.I.A. on her album opener “Bamboo Banga”, at least in terms of lyrics.
A later highlight is the sugary pop RnB of the late Syreeta Wright with “Your Kiss Is Sweet”. Don’t let our description put you off; it’s very fun and catchy. Great too is the Matthew Herbert remix of “Oscar Brown Jr - Brother Where Are You?” yes, a Matthew Herbert tune picked out by Fatboy Slim as being a favourite. It’s moody and excellent. Also worth the price of admission is “Robert Mitchum - From A Logical Point Of View”, featuring such wonderful lyrics as “better marry a woman uglier than you”, and yes, it’s that Robert Mitchum, singing in Calypso style.
Perhaps most controversially, Fatboy has included his own cover version of the Kraftwerk classic (do they have anything other than classics?) “Radioactivity”. It’s guaranteed to piss off every hardcore fan of the Germans, but it’s actually pretty good. Granted, it doesn’t do much to change it, but it sounds more like a Mark Ronson “version” than Fatboy. It’s cheeky, upbeat and fun, and if it was to stand on its own merits, it probably would be vilified, but surrounded by the eclectic classics on the rest of the CD, it perfectly forgivable and, in fact, enjoyable.
The majority of the album exudes a very dub and classic rock influence, working perfectly with the late night theme. It’s definitely a bit of a surprise to hear such interesting tracks to be selected by him, considering recent form. We’d definitely recommend you pick it up, as it’s enjoyable and something you’ll listen to loads!
