Meet the artist: Maser

To some of us around here Maser needs zero introduction. Dublin's most prolific graffiti artist is everywhere. His Maser loves U logo has dominated certain streets in the city for years. He's the most in demand graffiti artist in Ireland. And just to show you how busy he is, we asked for this interview nearly half a year ago. Still, better late than never.
Has your job ever got you laid, free drink, arrested?
What sort of question is that?... yes, yes and yes.
What did you want to be as a kid?
I knew I wanted to work out doors or else be as buff as a WWF wrestler. I also remember thinking I wanted to work in the pine forests as a lumber jack, strange I know. I guess I sort of fulfilled my expectations. An urban lumberjack of some sorts... I've got the check shirts to prove it.
What's the best tool of your trade?
Probably the most used is spraypaint, a very verstile medium. I really do enjoy getting the opportunity to use different materials on certain projects simply because the outcome is totally different.
Why did you choose these three images?
To show you the range of my work and the possibilities with spraypaint. Some are a few years old. I studied fine art, but with the help of ELSI (another graffiti writer) and Jameson whisky I dropped out in the first year. I did life drawing classes in the evening, then followed on to study Graphic design. I try to bring all aspects of my education into my graffiti work.
If your art was music what would it sound like?
That's tricky, I see them as two different worlds, I can relate colour to moods and sounds. I guess the stuff I've been doing recently would be electronic based, I try to achieve a clean vector look to my hand rendered work. The Maser Loves U work I do on the streets has a lot of rounded type and fluorescent colours... bubble gum pop!
Slate yourself.
I've red hair, no money, an ulcer, I suffer from chronic stress disorder and I'm ugly.
Big up yourself.
I've a massive cock.
How far have you gone for your art?
Nothing too mad, my work is my day to day living, it's what I do all the time, even if that's just dropping a tag on the back of the bus. Travelled around to a few different places painting, Denmark, England, Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, New York. I've slept in a golf course once so I could paint a train. I've paid over €6,000 on damages and have a conviction, but that's because I'm an idiot.
Idiot or no idiot, this boy's good. See more of him right here.
