Your Name
Mark Broadbent
What do you do?
I'm the musical director of We Love...Musik LTD. I program talent for shows around the world under the We Love... banner. Our mainstay is a weekly - 17 over the summer months - Sunday party that we have been running for 14 years at the infamous Space Beach Club on the Spanish Island of Ibiza. Amongst other things
Whats a typical day like?
Fantastic ! I walk to work through the streets of the old town from my home there, past the harbor to my office that has amazing sea views and listen to music all day. I also answer emails in regards to potential bookings, invites to take part in something or other in some far flung part of the world or simply catch up with friends who are in the industry to see what they are thinking. Thats typical of TODAY. I think I may have some kind of disorder as reading this back my work life sounds amazing but sometimes I bloody hate it too !
Worst part of being the boss?
Managing people and when that goes wrong having to sack them. It's horrible because you always know that at the end of the day you are partly to blame.
The best?
Getting people excited about what you have been dreaming about doing. Moving things forward and taking chances and then seeing them come to fruition. Being in control of your destiny and all that means for good or bad.
How many people do you manage?
Well, if I'm honest I just about manage myself but there are lots of people who work for us that would tell you that I'm their boss. I have ideas that do get followed by other people but really my wife Sarah gets most of this done. We employ about 30 staff members over the summer months and have a core team of seven all year not including design teams and web people that work for us outside of our company, I do actually manage some of these people as it goes !
How do you see your industry changing in the next five years?
Ours is always changing and yet stays the same so hopefully more of that please.
How do you unwind?
I take long vacations with my wife Sarah in the winter months. We try to see as much of the world as possible and get involved with what it has to offer. Trekking, diving, sailing, rafting blah blah blah. When not traveling I like to read, listen to music and my biggest love outside of music would have to be cooking, I love it and spend a lot of time making nice things to eat for friends and family. We also spend a lot of time exploring the island, finding hidden spots and climbing its hills. And I drink....and smoke dope.
What type of boss would you say you are?
Funny or frightening depending on what side of the fence you sit. I have no time for people who tit about but if you have passion about what you do and get stuck in I am a very fair person and I'd like to think also very supportive. Today anyway !
*footnote I am in the office alone today !
Where do you go from here?
Well you have me right at the start of summer - depending when this gets published - so it's all systems go for the next five or six months. Not much sleep, too much to drink, lots of shouting, a huge amount of worry and then it will be time for me to go on holiday again. I'm off to Myanmar this next winter and then back to start it all again.
