Ask the Boss: Alexander Nut
Q/A with The Boss of Eglo records in advance of his Twisted Pepper Gig this friday . . .
Playing this friday at the Twisted Pepper is Eglo Records label boss and Rinse Fm's most diverse selector, Alexander Nut has made a name for himself blending all corners of the contemporary music spectrum into a glimmering prism of late-night futurism, regularly filling Saturday afternoon's with a mutant brew of bass heavy sounds from hip hop to house to dubstep and beyond, showcasing a plethora of producers with a mixing style all his own. His label Eglo Records (co-run with Floating Points) has fast become a byword for eclectic quality and continues to push the musical envelope with contrasting releases from Floating Points, Funkineven, Mizz Beats, Fatima and Arp 101. In 2009 Nut released the 8th in the Rinse mix CD series, which was voted No.3 in Phonica's top 100 releases of the year. A regular at FWD, Plastic People, Deviation and Fabric.
Your Name
Alexander Nut
What do you do?
Too much! I run Eglo Records, Ho Tep records, I have a radio show on Rinse FM, I dj in clubs,,,, I have a Music PR company called AYK and I A&R for a few other labels. It's a lot. In my spare time I paint, draw, cook, make music and watch way to many crap films and weird documentaries. Give me a documentary on space travel, medieval super powers, or ancient hi-technology and i'm happy.
Whats a typical day like?
I hate typical days, they're the worst.... it's mostly normal administrative and clerical stuff, lots of organizing and co-ordinating and way to many hours spent in front of a computer sending emails. Lots of meetings, lots of phone calls. I love untypical days tho. I like creative days. I like days at the British Museum or days spent in foreign countries.
Worst part of being the boss?
Being everyone's social worker, keeping the peace. Not exploding. And being held accountable for everything. There's a million other things too. But lets talk about the positives instead.
The best?
Feeling like a proud dad every time my people do great things. Feeling like your contributing something genuine and real to this strange world. And doing it all for the right reasons.
How many people do you manage?
Again,, too many... and then some. And I still can't even manage myself.
How do you see your industry changing in the next five years?
I'd rather not answer, it just depresses me. It'll come back around tho, but it'll take a while, so for now, we just stay old school and do it our way, the way we like.
How do you unwind?
Water, being in and around water, or being in hot temperature. I find swimming quite mediative ... making a beat is therapeutic too... as is doing radio or dj'ing. Anything that involves zoning out and being fully engrossed in what your doing. It's like meditation.
What type of boss would you say you are?
One little crazy one with a napoleon complex.
Where do you go from here?
Everywhere I hope.
